MemoryActive storage for information, consisting of microchips usually refered to as RAM chips, (Random Access Memory). This is distinct from the disc drives which typically can store larger amounts of information. When data is accessed from a hard drive, it typically is transferred to the RAM chips in order to provide in and out repeatable access to this data, without the user having to wait for it to be accessed from the hard disc each time it is required. Ram is typically used to hold applications while they are in use.
